As a millennial, I am too addicted to social media. But I prefer viewing the things others pose, than posting about my own views. I have come to realize in this process that people have the tendency to complain and express negative feelings on the internet. In China, we call this “丧 (pronounced ‘Sang’, meaning mourning) culture”. I began to be interested in the prevalence of this culture on social media, and have looked into the social media communication theory and the reasons behind the popularity of Sang culture. In the research, how information is disseminated on social media are skin to how diseases spread. So similarly, negative things tend to catch on on social media, as if people have caught a disease that is easily passed around. In this project, I’d like to ‘cure’ these people with a humorous tone of voice, by making up a creative medicine brand that will be communicated on social media to disrupt the chain of infection, or to cure people. I would like to use this project to bring attention to how negative feelings are widely broadcast on social media, and send out a warning message that such feelings shouldn’t be the mainstream views on the internet.
